How to Choose a Doctor If You Are Diabetic

Perhaps the first step would be to decide if you are satisfied with your current doctor. You may want to ask your doctor the same questions you would ask when interviewing a new doctor and then decide.

The second step would be to make a list of doctors that your friends, relatives, co-workers, etc. would recommend. Are some of the doctors being recommended by more than one person? You may want to put them on the first of the list.

The third step would be to check availability. Is the prospective doctor accepting new patients? This is a question that is more important any other questions. It makes no sense to select a doctor if they will not/cannot accept you as a patient. A simple phone call to the appointment desk of the doctor will answer this question.

The fourth step is to find out if the doctor is accepted on your health care plan. This is another question you can ask the appointment desk or check with your insurance carrier.

If the doctor is not on your plan, how much would it cost to see them? You may want to pay the extra money if they are the best doctor. This is another question for your insurance carrier.

Here are some questions that you can ask your doctor's support staff.

1. What hospitals does the doctor use?

2. What are the normal office hours? (Do these hours fit my schedule?)

3. If English is not my first language, is there someone in the office that can interpret?

4. Who covers for the doctor when they are not available?

5. How long do I have to wait to get a routine appointment?

6. How long do I have to wait in the waiting room before seeing the doctor?

If the answers to these questions are acceptable - make an appointment.

After The Appointment

Ask yourself these questions following the appointment:

1. Did I get a chance to ask questions?

2. Did the doctor answer my questions?

3. Did the doctor explain their answers so that I could understand them?

4. Did the doctor ask me questions?

5. Do I feel comfortable asking questions?

6. Do I feel that the doctor spent enough time with me?

7. Did I feel rushed to get my problems out?

8. Did I get my problem fully addressed?

9. Did the doctor offer me more than one treatment option?

10. Do I feel that the doctor respects me?

Consider the answer to these questions. Selecting a doctor is very important, especially if you are diabetic. Having a doctor who can take the time to address your concerns is truly an asset to your health care team.

Ultimately you are the coach in your health care team and the doctor is one of the players.

How to Choose the Right Eye Doctor For You

It is very important for people of all ages to make sure they have a good eye doctor they can go to for their yearly eye exams and in case of an emergency. In Michigan, there are lots of doctors from which to choose. Finding a Flint eye doctor is not difficult because Flint vision care is available in almost every suburb. There are lots of different criteria you can use to find the perfect optometrist for you. If the school the doctor went to is important to you, you can easily look online to find the doctors in your area that graduated from the school you are looking for. It is important also, to make sure that the doctor you choose is board certified, meaning they have been approved by a prestigious group that has universal standards for their doctors. If the doctor's personality is important to you, then you can go into a few offices in your area and request to meet each doctor in the office. All of these measures for finding a doctor are acceptable and it is up to you to decide what you want in an eye doctor.

Many people like to choose their eye doctor based on the school from which he or she graduated. Some patients prefer an eye doctor that has gone to an ivy league school for both undergraduate school and graduate school, while others like an eye doctor that has gone to graduate school at an ivy league school. Using the school that the doctor graduated from is a good indicator of how much a doctor knows about vision care. However, looking at only the school the doctor went to is obviously not a good indicator of what type of personality the doctor will have.

There are also a fair amount of people who do not put a lot of emphasis on where their optometrist went to school, but they do care about the personality their doctor has. Some doctors can be short with their patients and not as personable as others. Some doctors may be shy and therefore may not be able to explain any procedures or diagnosis as well as someone with an outgoing personality. Some people like an optometrist who just tells them what they need to know and then moves onto the next patient so the yearly check-ups are quick and simple. Others like to have a more personal relationship with their eye doctor and therefore they like someone who is more chatty and someone who can go into great detail about their diagnosis. The best way to select a doctor based on personality is to ask friends and family for recommendations and then go to two or three different doctors and select from there.

It is important for people to be able to count on their optometrist for a proper diagnosis and in case of an emergency. Some people like to choose their eye doctor by only looking at the school the optometrist attended. Others like to select an eye doctor based on the doctor's personality. It is best to remember that selecting an eye care doctor is your personal choice and you need to make sure you can be comfortable with the doctor you choose.

How to Choose a Doctor

This may be the most important decision that you will make after deciding to add to your family. The doctor that you choose will be the one that you put the possibility of your future child in. Ask yourself this, what kind of doctor do you want to have? One that will answer your questions so you understand, take your calls, no matter the reason, tell you what is going on, and is ready and willing to take the steps needed to help you achieve pregnancy. Or a doctor that doesn't really answer your questions, has the nurse take and answer your calls, and then dances around what is going on by telling you to keep trying and stop worrying.

Yeah, I would take the first one too! So how do you find a great doctor? Easy! Interview them! As soon as you and your partner decide that you would like to add to your family, start interviewing. You and your spouse need to come up with a list of questions that are important to both of you that you can ask the prospective doctor.

You already have a doctor? Great!! Now ask yourself, are you satisfied with your doctor? Do you feel that your doctor is doing everything possible to assist you? Can you reach your doctor anytime?? If one of your employees acted and treated you the same way your doctor does, would you give them a raise or fire them? If you really, and I mean really, would give him a raise, then you have the best doctor you could possibly find. If, on the other hand, you would rather fire him, THEN DO IT!! Walk into his office and tell the staff that you need to see your doctor. Then tell him why you are unhappy. If your doctor is willing to do more for you, then give him another chance. If he tries to brush you off, tell him he is fired and you want all of your medical records NOW!! Do not leave the office without them in your hands, or without them having been transferred to your new doctor.

That was step one of how to choose a doctor. Step two is getting references from friends, family, and co-workers for an OB/GYN (or RE). Take five doctors that were given to you the most. Call their offices and let them know that you are interviewing for a new doctor. All good doctors are more then willing to sit down with prospective patients. Try to get as many lined up in one day as possible, and if you need to interview on more then one day, don't let it be more then two days apart. Make a list of questions, and enough copies for all the interviews. Leave enough space between each question for notes. Both you and your partner need to go to the interviews. Both of you need to be comfortable with and trust your doctor. This is the person that will be bringing your baby into the world and making sure that you both are healthy.

Step three is deciding on a doctor once the interviews are over. It may be obvious to some couples which doctor is the best choice. Others may not see it as an easy choice. For those couples the best thing to do is take the top three names, write them on pieces of paper and put the papers in a hat or another container that you can't see through. Draw out a name, and that will be your new doctor. Not happy with the choice? Then that was not the doctor that you really wanted to see. If you pull out a name and are happy, then that is the doctor for you.

Once the decision has been made, call your new doctor. If you didn't need to change doctors, call your doctor anyhow! Now is the time to make your appointment. This will be a preconception appointment and you need to tell them when you call to schedule.

This procedure for finding a doctor can also be used if you and your partner feel it is time to find a reproductive endocrinologist, or any other type of doctor. I wish you all good luck with finding the best doctor possible!
